🇺🇸 The Ghost Army: America’s Secret Weapon of Creativity
Discover the incredible story of the WWII Ghost Army — the secret U.S. unit that used creativity and illusion to save lives. A-1 American, a veteran-owned and family-operated company in Hampton Roads, celebrates their legacy this Veterans Day.

The Hidden Heroes of World War II
A little trivia for those that don't know on this Veterans Day!
Long before stealth jets and cyber warfare, an elite U.S. Army unit fought with creativity instead of bullets.
Officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, the “Ghost Army” was formed in 1944 to deceive German forces and protect Allied troops using art, sound, and illusion.
Art Meets Strategy
This 1,100-man team of artists, engineers, radio operators, and designers staged entire fake military divisions across Europe.
They used:
- Inflatable tanks and trucks that could be deployed overnight.
- Recorded battlefield sounds blasted from giant loudspeakers.
- Fake radio transmissions to mimic large troop movements.
- Actors posing as officers in nearby towns to spread false information.
These creative tactics misled German reconnaissance and drew fire away from real units, saving countless lives and paving the way for key Allied victories like the Rhine River crossing.
A Roster of Remarkable Talent
Many Ghost Army soldiers were future American art icons — among them Bill Blass, Ellsworth Kelly, and Arthur Singer.
Their battlefield brushstrokes and sound designs became weapons of deception, proving that art and innovation could win wars.
A Secret Revealed
For nearly five decades, the Ghost Army’s achievements were
classified.
Their missions were declassified only in 1996, and in 2022, the U.S. Congress awarded the Ghost Army the Congressional Gold Medal, recognizing their courage, ingenuity, and contribution to Allied success in Europe.
