Don’t Leave Money on the Table: Take Advantage of Energy & Solar Tax Credits Before the End of the Year

December 15, 2025

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your HVAC system, adding solar, or making your home more energy-efficient — now is the time.

As the year winds down, many homeowners don’t realize they could qualify for valuable federal energy tax credits that can put real money back in their pocket.

At A-1 American, we talk to homeowners across Hampton Roads every day who wish they had known sooner. So let’s break this down in plain English — no confusing tax jargon, just smart planning before the calendar flips.

What Are Energy Efficiency Tax Credits?

Federal energy tax credits are incentives designed to help homeowners reduce energy consumption, lower utility bills, and upgrade to more efficient systems. If you install qualifying equipment before December 31, you may be eligible to claim these credits on your tax return.

Common HVAC Upgrades That May Qualify

Depending on the system and efficiency rating, tax credits may apply to:

  • High-efficiency heat pumps
  • Energy-efficient HVAC system replacements
  • Certain furnace upgrades
  • Qualified central air conditioning systems
  • Smart thermostats (when installed with qualifying systems)

Why Timing Matters (Especially Right Now)

Tax credits are based on when the system is installed, not when you start shopping. That means if installation isn’t completed by the end of the year, you may miss out — even if you’ve already paid a deposit.

As HVAC schedules fill up quickly during colder weather, waiting until the last minute can mean:

  • Limited installation availability
  • Delays that push projects into the next year
  • Missed tax credit opportunities

That’s why A-1 American encourages homeowners to get on the schedule early.

Solar Tax Credits: One of the Biggest Savings Opportunities

Thinking about solar? The federal solar tax credit (Investment Tax Credit – ITC) is one of the most powerful incentives available to homeowners today.

What the Solar Tax Credit Covers

  • Solar panel systems
  • Solar-related equipment
  • Installation and labor costs
  • Certain battery storage systems (when applicable)

This credit allows eligible homeowners to deduct a percentage of the total system cost from their federal taxes — a major savings opportunity.

How to Set Yourself Up for Maximum Savings

Here’s how A-1 American recommends approaching energy and solar upgrades before year-end:

1. Schedule a Professional Evaluation

Every home is different. A professional HVAC or energy assessment helps determine:

  • Which systems qualify for tax credits
  • Which upgrades will actually lower your energy bills
  • The best ROI for your home

2. Choose Qualified, High-Efficiency Equipment

Not all systems qualify. Efficiency ratings matter — and so does proper installation. A-1 American ensures recommended systems meet current energy efficiency standards.

3. Complete Installation Before December 31

This is critical. Tax credits typically apply to completed installations, not estimates or purchases alone.

4. Keep Your Documentation

Save:

  • Invoices
  • Manufacturer certifications
  • Installation records
These documents are important when filing your taxes.

Bonus: Lower Energy Bills Year After Year

The tax credit is just the beginning. Energy-efficient HVAC systems and solar upgrades can:

  • Reduce monthly utility bills
  • Improve indoor comfort
  • Increase home value
  • Reduce strain on older systems

It’s not just a tax break — it’s a long-term investment in your home.

First, a little background on Labor Day and how it came to play into American history. Labor Day is celebrated to honor the contributions and achievements of American workers and the labor movement. It recognizes the role of workers in building the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. The Holiday began in the late 19th century, during a time when working conditions were often harsh—long hours, unsafe workplaces, and little time off were common. Labor unions pushed for better conditions, fair wages, and reasonable workdays. The first Labor Day parade took place in New York City in 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union. In 1894, after years of growing support and following major labor strikes, Congress officially made Labor Day a federal holiday. It’s observed on the first Monday in September, serving both as a tribute to workers and as a symbolic “end of summer” celebration. Not to be confused with International Workers’ Day which is celebrated May 1st worldwide and focuses more on activism and workers’ rights, Labor Day focuses more as a tribute to workers with family time, picnics, parades, and community events like our concer series at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Hampton Roads -- which encompasses the Penninsula (Williamsburg, Newport News, and Hampton) AND South Side (Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Suffolk) has always been a working community, from the shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding, to the longshoremen at the Port of Virginia, to the military and civil service workers who keep our bases running. Labor Day really ties into that history because it’s a reminder of how much the region’s workforce has shaped the local economy and even national security. For many families here, Labor Day is also (for the lucky) the last long weekend before school starts, so you’ll see people heading to the beach at Virginia Beach, picnicking at local parks, or attending community events. It’s both a recognition of hard work and a chance for people in Hampton Roads to pause, recharge, and enjoy the fruits of their labor before the busy fall season kicks in. From the A-1 American Services family to yours... Please have a safe and happy Labor Day!! And if you find you need help with any clogs, water heater leaks, HVAC hiccups, clooged toilets our guys are standing by ready to help you and your family at a moments notice!
