Here’s a spook-tacular guide to some of the best candy-hauling neighborhoods in the Hampton Roads area! 👻

Guide to the best candy neighborhoods

Bay Colony (Virginia Beach) (Virginia Beach)

In Bay Colony the candy calls, down long lit lanes and haunted halls.
At dusk you start your treat-raid fun, until the clock strikes eight — you’re done. (In Virginia Beach trick-or-treating officially happens at
dusk and ends at 8:00 p.m. for children age 12 or younger.)
The houses light up, the residents play along, handing out full bars or bags so strong.
So don your cape, your mask, your shoes—then fill your bag with chocolates and chews.

Chesapeake Blvd / 5‑Points & Robinhood Area (Norfolk)

On Chesapeake Blvd between 5-Points and Robinhood you’ll go,
Where porches glow and candy flows beneath the moon’s soft show.
Trick-or-treaters young and bold walk the route, cookies, bars, and gummies sold.
In this Norfolk area the vibe is right, sweet-haul central on Halloween night.
(Reminder: Norfolk sets 8:00 p.m. as the cut-off for ages 12 and under.)

Time & event tip: Trick-or-treating in Norfolk: age 12 and under, until 8:00 p.m.
After you’ve loaded up on candy, you might check for a trunk-or-treat in the suburbs or a haunted house event later in the evening.

Olde Towne (Portsmouth)

In Olde Towne’s historic lanes you’ll find,
Lots of candy and ghosts of a friendly kind.
With charming homes trimmed in light,
You’ll gather treats deep into the night.
Portsmouth’s rules say eight o’clock ends the spree,
So bag your loot, then stroll off happily.

Northern Suffolk (Suffolk)

Up in Northern Suffolk the pumpkins grin wide,
Porch lights flicker, candy jars are supplied.
A little quieter than the busiest blocks,
But still plenty of sweetness in these walking walks.
Kids age twelve and under should round home by eight,
In this safe, suburban candy-collecting state.

Chesapeake Blvd / 5‑Points & Robinhood area – Norfolk

On Chesapeake Blvd between 5-Points and Robinhood you’ll go,
Where porches glow and candy flows beneath the moon’s soft show.
Trick-or-treaters young and bold walk the route, cookies, bars, and gummies sold.

For the Penninsula, we have got you covered there as well!

Buckroe Beach Area – Hampton

In the sandy lanes of Buckroe Beach by the shore,
You’ll find treats galore and sea-breeze and more.
As dusk grows dark and porch lights glow,
Kids age 12 and under start their candy show.
Hampton says: from
dusk until 8:00 p.m. is the deal.
So bag those sweets before the big clock wheels.
Stick to the homes with lights shining bright,
And walk the sidewalks safe tonight.

Hilton Village – Newport News

In Hilton Village where the historic homes stand tall,
Candy seekers stroll and costumed ghosts call.
Neat streets, eager hosts, lots of sugary fun,
Kids age 12 and under should run until 8, then done.
So load your bag, wear your costume with pride,
And hit Hilton Village before the night’s tide.

Kings Mill Area – Williamsburg

In Kings Mill by Williamsburg’s historic scene,
Candy bells ring and costumed kids convene.
The city says:
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for age 12 and under is the time.
So slide on your shoes, ring every bell,
But don’t linger past eight — you’ll lose the spell.

And just remember.....

In the hush of night, when the moon’s pale spark, the pipes start squealin’ deep in the dark.
A rattle, a hiss, a ghostly drip—A phantom plumber takes his trip!

Clanks in the crawlspace, moans in the drain, Ghastly gurgles echo again!

First, a little background on Labor Day and how it came to play into American history. Labor Day is celebrated to honor the contributions and achievements of American workers and the labor movement. It recognizes the role of workers in building the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. The Holiday began in the late 19th century, during a time when working conditions were often harsh—long hours, unsafe workplaces, and little time off were common. Labor unions pushed for better conditions, fair wages, and reasonable workdays. The first Labor Day parade took place in New York City in 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union. In 1894, after years of growing support and following major labor strikes, Congress officially made Labor Day a federal holiday. It’s observed on the first Monday in September, serving both as a tribute to workers and as a symbolic “end of summer” celebration. Not to be confused with International Workers’ Day which is celebrated May 1st worldwide and focuses more on activism and workers’ rights, Labor Day focuses more as a tribute to workers with family time, picnics, parades, and community events like our concer series at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Hampton Roads -- which encompasses the Penninsula (Williamsburg, Newport News, and Hampton) AND South Side (Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Suffolk) has always been a working community, from the shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding, to the longshoremen at the Port of Virginia, to the military and civil service workers who keep our bases running. Labor Day really ties into that history because it’s a reminder of how much the region’s workforce has shaped the local economy and even national security. For many families here, Labor Day is also (for the lucky) the last long weekend before school starts, so you’ll see people heading to the beach at Virginia Beach, picnicking at local parks, or attending community events. It’s both a recognition of hard work and a chance for people in Hampton Roads to pause, recharge, and enjoy the fruits of their labor before the busy fall season kicks in. From the A-1 American Services family to yours... Please have a safe and happy Labor Day!! And if you find you need help with any clogs, water heater leaks, HVAC hiccups, clooged toilets our guys are standing by ready to help you and your family at a moments notice!
