Drain Cleaning Information

Why Do Drains Clog?

There are many causes for a clogged drain. The most common type of clog in the home occurs in the kitchen because of the range of items that go in the sink. The debris builds up from grease, fats, oil, pieces of food and other waste. Other clogs come from soap, grime or hair building up in bathroom sinks. Regular drain cleaning service keeps your pipes in working order and flowing properly.

Most of the time, using a plunger will help clear up a stopped up drain, but if the clogs become more frequent in your home, you might have a growing problem deep in your pipes, such as a grease trap. For all of these problems call A-1 American Plumbing and Heating for professional plumbing and drain cleaning services.

Clogged Drain Cleaning Services in Hampton Roads and Williamsburg

With our industry equipment, we can clear those annoying clogs in no time at all.

Some of the most common reasons for clogged drains are:

HAIR

Hair is the largest guilty party for drain blockages. It will bind with grease and food - two other known culprits, and several other substances, and when it does it forms clogs. The best way to deal with hair blockages is to stop them before they even form.  Your best bet is to make sure all drains have guards to catch hair and to clean these regularly.

FOOD WASTE

You should never put food down the drain, even when you have a garbage disposal in your sink ( surprise! ). One way around this is to set up a composting pile to get rid of food waste. This is most important for waste like tea leaves and coffee grounds that don’t break down and can accumulate. Other foods to keep a cautious eye on include oil or grease as they can solidify in the pipes and cause a blockage. Instead, absorb oil or grease on a paper towel and throw it in the compost. You'll be doing the environment a favor!

DIRT

While you want to get excess dirt off you and your clothes, it can build up and cause issues in your drains over time OR if a substantial amount goes down the drain at one time. Shake or rinse excess dirt and mud off your clothes and body outside before washing them in your washer or shower.

SOAP

Traditional soap bars are actually made with grease or fat. The fat in the soap combines with minerals in water and leaves a hard residue (known as soap scum) that stains bath fittings and clogs pipes. One way to avoid this is to have your pipes pressure cleaned to remove traces of soap buildup.

TOILET PAPER BUILDUP

Too much toilet paper can clog your drains and stop your toilets from flushing. If water can still run through your toilet when flushed, you can use a plunger to shift and dissolve some of the toilet paper. Unfortunately, if your toilet just fills without draining, you’ll need to call a plumber to take care of the blockage for you.

MINERAL BUILDUP

Minerals dissolved in hard water can build up, causing masses that will easily block your drains. If this is the case, you could install a water softener for your home. If that’s not an option, you'll need to regularly descale to remove sediment and build up. Mineral buildup clogs can be difficult to remove once they're established, so give our professional plumbers a call if your drains and pipes no longer seem to be flowing correctly/losing pressure.

TREE ROOTS

Trees and shrubs seek moisture and the tiniest cracks or leaks in your underground pipes can attract tree root growth. Once inside your pipes tree roots can grow larger very quickly, blocking water flow and causing pipe damage. Clearing the tree roots from pipes can be complex and possibly require rooter service, pressure jet cleaning, trench-less repair, or even excavation. We recommend taking an inventory of where the root structure of your trees and plants are, and monitoring the condition of your drains as a preventive measure.

SMALL OBJECTS

Small objects can find their way into your plumbing and wreak mayhem. Whether it's your toddler or your teen (or you), nothing but water, toilet paper, and human waste should go down your toilet, sink, or drain. Any other object should be disposed of responsibly in the trash, compost, or recycling. If anything HAS gotten into your plumbing supply and is causing issues, you’ll probably need professional help to remove it.

With so many causes of clogged drains, the best way to fix them is to prevent them from being clogged in the first place. Never put anything you shouldn’t down the drain and avoid trying to clear drains by adding more chemicals or objects.

FAQ

Read below for answers to some of our clients’ most frequently asked questions:
How soon can a drain cleaning technician get to me?

At A-1 American, we understand that plumbing or HVAC services may be an emergency. We have a team of technicians on call 24/7 who take jobs on a first-come first-serve basis, so we can handle calls much quicker than the competition, usually getting to you the same day. (and often within a few hours)
How can you bill by the job, not by the hour?
When a technician writes up your quote, he will give you an estimate based on the parts and labor required for the job. This way, our quote will be the same regardless of how much time your technician spends on the project.
Do you offer free estimates?

A-1 American provides free estimates on specific services. If you are replacing your entire HVAC system, wanting to convert to a tankless water heater, or needing an entire house repiped, we are more than happy to provide our quotes free of charge. Unfortunately, due to travel and time limitations, we do require a $78 dispatch fee for all other assessments. This fee does not apply if you agree to the services recommended by the dispatched technician.
