What you need to know about Leaky Faucets, shower heads, and Clogs

1. Leaky Faucets & Showerheads

  • Causes: Worn-out washers, O-rings, corroded valve seats, or high water pressure can cause leaks.
  • Impact: A dripping faucet can waste hundreds of gallons of water per year, increasing water bills.
  • Fixes:
  • Tighten connections.
  • Replace washers, cartridges, or O-rings.
  • If leaks persist, consider replacing the faucet/showerhead.

2. Clogged Drains

  • Common Causes:
  • Bathroom sinks/showers: Hair, soap scum, and product buildup.
  • Kitchen sinks: Grease, food particles, and debris.
  • Toilets: Excess toilet paper or non-flushable items.
  • Prevention:
  • Use drain strainers to catch debris.
  • Avoid pouring grease or food waste down the drain.
  • Flush only toilet paper—no wipes, even "flushable" ones.
  • Fixes:
  • Use a plunger for minor clogs.
  • Try a drain snake or auger for deeper blockages.
  • Use a baking soda & vinegar mix for a natural solution.
  • Persistent clogs may require a professional plumber.

DIY Tips for Fixing Leaky Faucets, Showerheads, and Clogs

1. Fixing a Leaky Faucet

Tools Needed: Adjustable wrench, screwdriver, replacement washers/O-rings, plumber’s tape

🔹 Step-by-Step:

  1. Turn Off Water Supply – Locate shutoff valves under the sink and turn them off.
  2. Disassemble the Faucet – Use a screwdriver and wrench to remove the handle and stem.
  3. Inspect & Replace Washers/O-Rings – Worn-out washers are a common cause of leaks. Replace with the correct size.
  4. Reassemble & Test – Put everything back, turn on the water, and check for leaks.

🛠 Tip: If the leak persists, the faucet cartridge may need replacing.

2. Fixing a Leaky Showerhead

Tools Needed: Adjustable wrench, plumber’s tape, vinegar, old toothbrush

🔹 Step-by-Step:

  1. Tighten the Showerhead – Sometimes, the issue is just a loose connection.
  2. Remove & Clean the Showerhead – Unscrew it and soak in vinegar to remove mineral buildup. Scrub with a toothbrush.
  3. Apply Plumber’s Tape – Wrap Teflon tape around the pipe threads before reattaching.
  4. Reinstall & Test – Screw the showerhead back on and turn on the water.

🛠 Tip: If dripping continues, the issue may be inside the faucet valve, which may require a professional repair.

3. Clearing a Clogged Drain

✅ Tools Needed: Plunger, drain snake, baking soda, vinegar, boiling water

🔹 Step-by-Step (Minor Clogs):

  1. Pour Boiling Water down the drain to loosen grease and soap buildup.
  2. Use Baking Soda & Vinegar – Pour 1/2 cup baking soda, then 1 cup vinegar. Wait 10 minutes, then flush with hot water.

🔹 Step-by-Step (Stubborn Clogs):

  1. Use a Plunger – Create a tight seal and plunge forcefully several times.
  2. Try a Drain Snake – Insert into the drain, twist, and pull out debris.
  3. Check the P-Trap – Under the sink, remove the U-shaped pipe, clean it out, and reinstall.

🛠 Tip: Avoid chemical drain cleaners—they can damage pipes over time!

Happy Labor Day weekend graphic with tools and American flag.

First, a little background on Labor Day and how it came to play into American history. Labor Day is celebrated to honor the contributions and achievements of American workers and the labor movement. It recognizes the role of workers in building the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. The Holiday began in the late 19th century, during a time when working conditions were often harsh—long hours, unsafe workplaces, and little time off were common. Labor unions pushed for better conditions, fair wages, and reasonable workdays. The first Labor Day parade took place in New York City in 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union. In 1894, after years of growing support and following major labor strikes, Congress officially made Labor Day a federal holiday. It’s observed on the first Monday in September, serving both as a tribute to workers and as a symbolic “end of summer” celebration. Not to be confused with International Workers’ Day which is celebrated May 1st worldwide and focuses more on activism and workers’ rights, Labor Day focuses more as a tribute to workers with family time, picnics, parades, and community events like our concer series at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Hampton Roads -- which encompasses the Penninsula (Williamsburg, Newport News, and Hampton) AND South Side (Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Suffolk) has always been a working community, from the shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding, to the longshoremen at the Port of Virginia, to the military and civil service workers who keep our bases running. Labor Day really ties into that history because it’s a reminder of how much the region’s workforce has shaped the local economy and even national security. For many families here, Labor Day is also (for the lucky) the last long weekend before school starts, so you’ll see people heading to the beach at Virginia Beach, picnicking at local parks, or attending community events. It’s both a recognition of hard work and a chance for people in Hampton Roads to pause, recharge, and enjoy the fruits of their labor before the busy fall season kicks in. From the A-1 American Services family to yours... Please have a safe and happy Labor Day!! And if you find you need help with any clogs, water heater leaks, HVAC hiccups, clooged toilets our guys are standing by ready to help you and your family at a moments notice!
