Whether its the Covid-19 virus, perhaps someone in your home has allergies, or you just want to just have fresh air in your home or office, you may be interested to learn more about UV lights in your HVAC unit to clean your air. These germicidal uv lights can be installed in almost any HVAC system, AND they help sterilize air BEFORE it moves into your home.
Ultraviolet light is a highly effective tool to use against microorganisms, such as bacteria, mildew, and mold spores that can grow within the ductwork and in your home. It's not a failsafe way to eliminate these issues in the home, but it CAN go a long way towards reducing them, and it is a cost effective way of improving your home. In these uncertain times, UV germicidal lighting can also go a long way towards peace of mind for you and your family.
It starts with the air filter. There are a couple types of UV lights to know about
- Air Sterilization - For this method, a UV light unit is installed in the return air duct and cycles on with the air handler blower. A complete UV light unit sterilizes moving air as it is pushed through your HVAC system. This treats the air that may be contaminated.
- Coil Sterilization - This is the most common type of HVAC UV light, partly because it runs 24/7 days a week to ensure sterilization. A UV light is installed inside the return air duct and it sterilizes the air handler coil. In many cases, the coil and/or drain pan tend to be the source of contaminants, so in this type of sterilization, you are treating the origin of the problem as opposed to its symptom.
